Between Blackface Minstrelsy and Sideshow

Ramapo College, NJ. In this talk, Marshall will trace the roots and trajectory of blackface minstrelsy across the nineteenth century, honing in on the genesis of the form in white appropriations of black cultural production, and black reinvention of the genre post-war. Throughout, Marshall examines the intertwining social scripts surrounding race and disability that have historically animated performances of "blackness" in American poplar performance.

“____Face: The Afterlife of Racial Masquerade

___Face symposium is a daylong scholarly and performance event examining the history and cultural reverberations of racial masquerade. Specifically, the symposium looks to flip the script on past research that considers racial masquerade as a means of white identity formation, highlighting how scholars and artists of color engage with and subvert the performance technologies of black, red, yellow, brown, and whiteface as they have traveled across time, idiom, sense, and medium.
